Skyworks’ Si3406-based isolated flyback evaluation board family is a reference design for a power supply in a power over Ethernet (PoE) powered device (PD) application. This evaluation board family provides a simple and low-cost solution with different output voltages and power levels, while quality Würth Elektronik components contribute to its robustness.
The Si3406 IC integrates an IEEE 802.3at compatible PoE interface as well as a current control-based DC/DC converter. The Si3406 PD integrates an internal rectifier bridge, detection circuit, classification circuit, DC/DC switch, hot-swap switch, TVS overvoltage protection, dynamic soft-start circuit, cycle-by-cycle current limit, thermal shutdown, optional secondary-side synchronous rectification driver, automatic and user mode MPS generation, and inrush current protection. The PCB design allows users to quickly evaluate secondary-side synchronous rectification to further increase system efficiency. The design incorporates flyback EP10 power transformers, WE-RJ45 LAN through-hole connectors with integrated Ethernet transformer and common-mode choke, WE-CBF SMT EMI suppression ferrite beads, and WCAP-ATG5, WCAP-ATG8, and WCAP-ATLL aluminum electrolytic capacitors from Würth Elektronik.
