The ASIL standard defines functional safety as “the absence of unreasonable risk due to hazards caused by malfunctioning behavior of electrical or electronic systems.”  As the demand for comfortable driving experiences continue to grow, electrical vehicles are developing rapidly. The risks associated with electronic and electrical failures are also increasing. Current sensors with functional safety take more safety factors into consideration such as fault detection, fault isolation, and safe operation under fault conditions. These designs ensure that the sensor can quickly respond to malfunction, preventing greater damage or safety risks to the system. In contrast, current sensors without functional safety put less emphasis on behavior in fault conditions and can perform well under normal working conditions but may not detect or isolate faults in time, which increases system risk.

ASIL C safety-rated current sensors may have more complex control logic and stricter safety requirements, possibly requiring stricter procedures for installation, configuration, and use to ensure the sensor's functional safety performance. These sensors can offer more comprehensive fault diagnosis and status monitoring abilities, helping operators detect and address potential safety risks timely.
