RAA489255 Battery Front End

The Renesas RAA489255 battery front end is a low-cost 3-to-5 cell battery monitor that measures voltage and temperature and communicates this to an MCU for battery management. The device includes a current monitor and a 5-pin LED driver direct from the battery voltage to enable a low-cost state-of-charge display.

The RAA489255 optimizes integration for cost-sensitive applications. It features built-in capabilities for voltage and temperature measurements, current sensing, open wire detection, and an integrated LED drive that operates directly from the battery (V_BAT). Additionally, strategic design and package engineering choices focus on cost optimization, making it an ideal solution for low-cost battery management applications.

To accelerate design time, Renesas is developing ARM-based solution code that can be used as a complete, ready-to-go solution or as a foundation for further code development. This pre-developed software helps streamline pack design, reducing time to market. Moreover, the code is fully compatible with RA microcontrollers and the flexible software package (FSP), ensuring seamless integration with existing Renesas development ecosystems.

The RAA489255 ensures simple operation by minimizing the use of complex internal state machines, making it easier to understand and implement. Instead of enforcing strict control logic, it provides critical information to the pack MCU while giving the design team the flexibility to determine how best to utilize the data. This approach enhances adaptability while maintaining straightforward functionality.
