Residential Energy Storage Systems
Infineon's energy storage systems (ESS) are designed to empower a greener future
Infineon Technologies' energy storage systems excel in efficiency, performance, optimal cost, and innovation with offerings such as discretes based on Si, SiC, GaN, IGBT modules, integrated Easy 1B/2B modules, EiceDRIVER™ gate driver ICs, XMC™ and PSoC™ controllers, and OPTIGA™ security solutions.
In a world with diminishing fossil reserves and a need for climate action, the transition to renewable energies is inevitable. Energy storage remains a key player in electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. However, the rise of renewable energy introduces challenges in delivering power reliably.
Infineon Technologies' commitment extends to managing the supply-demand situation, creating a resilient energy infrastructure, and bringing cost savings to utilities and consumers. The battery-based ESS technology can respond to power drop-outs in under one second, making use of clean energy that is sourced from collocated solar or wind plants. In these before-the-meter cases, ESS functions as bulk storage coupled with renewable generation or transmission and distribution systems. In residential and commercial situations, an ESS plays a role in behind-the-meter cases.
An ESS has a typical structure consisting of two main parts including the power conversion system (PCS) which handles AC/DC and DC/AC conversion, with energy flowing into the batteries to charge them or to be converted from battery storage into AC power and fed into the grid. Suitable power device solutions depend on the voltages that are supported and the power flowing. The battery management system (BMS) handles cell charging, balancing, and health monitoring, complemented by a microcontroller (MCU) providing system control and communication, essential elements to integrate an ESS into larger systems.
