System efficiency

Over fifty programmable parameters use an integrated digital SPI to enable the MOTIX 6EDL7141 to be fully configurable to drive a broad range of MOSFETs, thus allowing the best possible system efficiency.

Maximum flexibility

The MOTIX 6EDL7141 impresses with maximized flexibility offering an operating voltage ranging from 5.5 V to 60 V, a configurable gate drive sink, and a source current up to 1.5 A. The gate driver supply voltages can be set for the following levels: 7 V, 10 V, 12 V, or 15 V. Thanks to built-in charge pumps, these voltage levels can be maintained even if the battery voltage drops to a lower level. Moreover, adjustable gate drive parameters enable the MOTIX 6EDL7141 to control the slew rate for reducing system EMI. All settings of Infineon’s three-phase smart gate driver can be quickly adjusted with the available easy-to-use GUI.

Integrated buck regulator and converter

The integrated buck regulator requires only an external capacitor and inductor to provide power for the microcontroller and the Hall sensors in the motor, reducing peripheral components and the PCB area. An integrated synchronous buck converter provides an efficient supply of current to the rest of the system.

Advanced power supply architecture

Power tools systems require accurate current measurements involving very precise ADC reference voltage. In order to meet the requirements, the MOTIX 6EDL7141 uses a linear voltage regulator powered by an internal buck converter to supply the MCU and other sensitive components in the system. This advanced power supply architecture achieves not only the best possible signal quality but also optimized power efficiency at any input or output condition.

Protection features

This smart gate drive controller provides a full suite of system protection features to improve application robustness in adverse operating conditions. The failure behavior, threshold voltages, and filter times are adjustable via SPI. Monitored aspects include inverter currents, gate drive voltages and currents, device temperature, and rotor-locked instances. The integrated SPI provides detailed faults, reporting a flexible parameter setting such as gain of the current sense amplifiers, slew rate control of the gate drivers, and various protection features or gate driver voltage.

Evaluation made easy

The related evaluation board (EVAL_6EDL7141_TRAP_1SH) features fully configurable operating parameters with an on-board debugger, ready for direct USB connection to a PC. This BLDC motor drive board uses trapezoidal commutation based on the MOTIX 6EDL7141 smart three-phase driver.

The evaluation board operates with motors that include integrated Hall sensors for rotor position sensing. This solution combines Infineon components XMC1400 series microcontroller (XMC1404-VQFN64-200kB); three-phase half-bridge MOSFET gate driver and motor control IC (MOTIX 6EDL7141); and OptiMOS™ 6 power MOSFET (BSC007N04LS6).
