Digital Isolation Technology

ADI offers integrated, compact, robust, and reliable solutions that solve our customers’ protocol transmission challenges. Our broad portfolio offers solutions spanning isolated field bus (RS-485, CAN, and LVDS) as well as peripheral communications (I2C, USB, SPI, and RS-232).

I2C isolators

Analog Devices’ isolated I2C isolators provide full support for isolated I2C interfaces using iCoupler® chip scale transformer technology. This technology offers superior functional performance, smaller size, and lower power consumption compared to optocouplers. ADIs' I2C Isolated devices are well-suited for applications such as Isolated I2C/SMBus Interface, Battery Management Systems, motor contorl system and power over Ethernet.

Isolated Controller Area Network (CAN)

ADI isolated controller area network (CAN) transceivers provide the differential physical layer interface between the data layer link, hardware protocol (for example, embedded in some of ADI's Blackfin® processors), and the physical wiring of the CAN bus. ADI's portfolio includes transceivers with integrated iCoupler® and isoPower® isolation, providing, fully isolated off-the-shelf CAN PHY's.

Isolated LVDS

Analog Devices isolated LVDS (low voltage differential signalling) devices utilise Analog Devices, Inc., iCoupler® technology, enhanced for high-speed operation. These robust, high-speed drop-in isolators support up to 2.5 Gbps per channel, configurable to support bandwidths up to 10 Gbps. Unlike costly fiber, deserialized links, or custom solutions, ADI´s Gigaspeed Digital LVDS isolators compliant to TIA/EIA-644-A, provide integrated high-performance isolation for applications such as analog front-end, processor-to-processor communication, video and imaging data, and board or cable interfaces for LVDS or CML signal chains.

Isolated RS-232

Isolated RS-232, defined by TIA/EIA-232-F, transmits data over simple, unterminated cables at up to 1 Mbps. Analog Devices offers isolated iCoupler® and μModule® RS-232 transceivers that eliminate ground loops, protect against voltage spikes and transients, and offer integrated DC/DC converters. iCoupler technology minimizes PCB space while ensuring reliable power and signal isolation in noisy environments. μ‎Module RS-232 transceivers provide isolated solutions with no external components and up to 1 W of additional power.

Isolated RS-485

ADI's Isolated RS-485 devices, defined by TIA-485-A/EIA-485-A, supports up to 256 nodes on a 2-wire bus, offering excellent noise immunity for high-speed communication over long distances. Analog Devices' RS-485/RS-422 Isolated transceivers are ideal for industrial fieldbus, Modbus, PROFIBUS®, process control, building automation, and motor control applications. The ADI Isoalated RS485 protfolio come in half- or full-duplex models with options for extended temperature, ultralow skew, enhanced drive strength, full fail-safe, hot swap support, low voltage logic interfaces, integrated termination, and robust EMC protection against IEC surge, EFT, ESD, and overvoltage faults.

SPI Isolators

SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) is a widely used interface for connecting microcontrollers with peripheral ICs like sensors, ADCs, DACs, and SRAM. Analog Devices offers isolated SPI digital isolators that support this synchronous, full-duplex controller-peripheral interface. Built with ADI's iCoupler® technology, these devices provide a small footprint, easy integration, fast speeds, and high data integrity. Integrated isoalted µModules require no external components, enhancing performance and saving board space. These ADI SPI isolators are ideal for communication across different ground potentials or large common mode transients, typical in industrial PLCs and data acquisition systems.

USB Isolators

USB isolators protect the communication interface between a host (e.g., a PC) and its peripherals. Using iCoupler® digital isolation technology, Analog Devices offers USB 2.0 compliant components with data rates 1.5Mbps, 12Mbps and 480Mbps, providing EMC protection, safety isolation, and reduced design size, time, and system cost. Galvanically isolated USB μModule® transceivers integrate the USB interface with an isolated DC/DC converter for up to 2.5 W of isolated power and ±15 kV ESD protection. These transparent USB digital isolators are ideal for hosts, hubs, bus splitters, and peripheral devices in medical and industrial applications.

Isolated Power Conversion

isoPower® chip-scale transformers remove design complexity and optimize power solutions. μModule devices create solutions that provide additional auxiliary isolated power. Isolated amplifiers provide power supply engineers with an upgrade in speed, temperature, and transient response over traditional optocoupler options. A/D converters (ADCs) enable precision motor drive system architectures.

Isolated Gate Drivers

Analog Devices' small form factor isolated gate drivers are designed for high switching speeds and compact system sizes required by SiC (silicon carbide) and GaN (gallium nitride) power switches, while reliably controlling IGBT and MOSFET configurations for high-side and low-side switches. Using ADI’s iCoupler isolation and high-speed CMOS technology, these drivers offer ultralow propagation delay and excellent common-mode transient immunity (CMTI). Their high pulse fidelity architecture enhances motor power efficiency, and superior timing performance stability reduces voltage distortion, harmonics, and output power content in solar inverters.

Isolated A/D Converters

As a leading supplier of data converters, Analog Devices continually introduces new A/D converters (ADCs) that drive system architectures. In motor control, ADI’s converters address challenges in current and voltage monitoring, optical encoder feedback, and resolver-to-digital conversion. The isolated ADC with a 3.75 kV standoff voltage exemplifies ADI’s advancements in performance and integration, simplifying design efforts.

Isolation Amplifiers

Isolation amplifiers offer power supply designers a high-performance, single-chip alternative to optocouplers and shunt regulators. Analog Devices’ ADuM3190 and ADuM4190 isolated error amplifiers feature a 400 kHz bandwidth, 0.5% typical initial accuracy at 25°C, and 1% total accuracy from –40°C to +125°C. These amplifiers provide ac-to-dc and dc-to-dc power supply manufacturers with enhanced speed, a broader operating temperature range, and a fivefold improvement in transient response.

isoPower

Analog Devices' isoPower® technology integrates isolated dc-to-dc converters with data isolation using proprietary iCoupler® chip scale transformers. This provides designers a cost-effective, compact, and reliable alternative to optocouplers, with over one billion channels shipped, ensuring safe and easy implementation in various applications.
