Windows 10 Cortana Comes to the Raspberry Pi - Turn your Pi into a voice-controlled assistant

Windows 10’s popular voice assistant Cortana can now be enabled on the Raspberry Pi revision 2 and 3. Once Cortana is setup on Windows 10 IoT Core, your Raspberry Pi will be able to act like a voice-controlled assistant, answering questions. This isn’t the first time we have seen a popular voice assistant come to the Raspberry Pi platform, just last year came Amazons Alexa voice assistant and also Google’s own voice search assistant has also been ported to the Raspberry Pi. This update by Windows is welcomed in the voice assistant market and now users have more options than ever before.
The voice platform doesn’t come without some flaws such as if you wish for Cortana on your Raspberry Pi to automatically listen for commands, it requires you to configure the Raspberry Pi via software on a networked Windows 10 PC, which some users will not have access to. You will also need to attach a supported microphone and speaker to the Raspberry Pi, which is limited. Currently, Cortana cannot yet support music playback, calendar functions, alarms and timers, which is disappointing.
This move seems to slightly broaden the Cortana platform even though they are chasing behind Amazon Alexa service. The aim, however, is to allow users to skip through some hoops to complete overall tasks in such commercial products as thermostats or refrigerators, according to Microsoft.
The Cortana assistant does not just come to the Raspberry Pi platform but other devices that are capable of running Windows 10 IoT Core such as the latest Intel Joule, Minnowboard Max, and the Dragon 410C. Cortana isn’t the only latest update to the Windows 10 IoT platform they have also included the ability for the OS to detect other nearby windows devices signed into the same Microsoft account, allowing these devices to be managed in the Microsoft Azure IoT hub.
