Doggie Door Install with ISOLOSS™ LS Polyurethane Foam
Sitting by the back door, staring longingly at the squirrels and other critters having a good time in the summer sun - that was a usual day for the pups, wishing they could spend all day outside. That’s when the decision was made: put in a storm door with a built-in doggy door. Everything went according to plan. Order. Pick up. Remove old door. Assemble new door. Install new door. Only one issue – when the door frame is no longer square, you’re going to have a bad time.
Despite making the max adjustments to the door assembly, a 1/4” gap remained on the non-hinge side between the top of the storm door and the head jamb. The gap decreased in size as you moved across the top of the door towards the hinge-side and became nonexistent at the halfway point. This left about 18” of unsealed exposure to the outside air. Mosquitos and all.
A quick fix: microcellular foam. A strip of ISOLOSS™ LS-1525 adhered along the underside of the head jamb keeps the bugs out and removes the draft blowing through the gap space. When the door closes, the foam creates a cushioned backstop for the upper portion of the door to rest against, creating a slight compression in the foam which helps to create a light-duty weather-strip seal.
End result: all-day access to a doggy door gives the dogs the ability to play outside to their heart’s content. What do they actually do? Sit inside with the air-conditioning, staring longingly at the squirrels and other critters having a good time in the summer sun. At least there are no mosquitos in the house.
