Traceability

Traceability helps provide clear insight into the various steps of the manufacturing process. Our customers steadily use the information we provide to improve processes, support defect resolutions, help with regulation and compliance, and protect their brand integrity. Please see the following information regarding traceability features we offer to our customers.

Barcoding:

We adhere to the ECIA (Electronic Component Industry Association) barcoding specifications as much as possible. A barcode or bar code is a method of representing data in a visual, machine-readable form. DigiKey utilizes two different kinds of barcodes, 1D barcodes which hold 20-25 characters worth of information and 2D barcodes which can hold upwards of 2000 characters. ECIA has more information about 2D Barcode technology on their website, ecianow.org. Barcoding can contain information about the product such as country of origin, date codes, and lot codes.

Date Code / Lot Code:

These numbers identify when the component is being manufactured. They are for the factory’s production quality control and tracing purposes. See below for more information on what they mean specifically:

  • Date codes: Date codes are a point of reference to trace product back to a manufacturer. Sometimes the date code signifies when the part was manufactured, but not always depending on manufacturer.
  • Lot Code: A Lot Code is a batch number indicating a group of parts made by a manufacturer during a specified period of time. They are often tailored for specific types of businesses and products, which means different manufacturers have their own rules relating to how to interpret them. DigiKey works hard to create transparency around this process.

Country of Origin:

Country where the part was manufactured. Data required includes the two-character code from the ISO 3166 standard country code list.

Manufacturer CofC:

A Certificate of Conformity, or CoC, is issued by an authorized party and states that the product meets the required standards or specification. The CoC can either be requested by a buyer to ensure the product being manufactured has been tested and passes the set criteria within a specification and meets both technical and safety requirements, or it could be a mandatory requirement as stated by country regulations and law for certain products, such as Bluetooth devices being sold in the USA.

If the manufacturer has made the C of C available, we will happily provide it to you. At the time of your order, please add the request for the manufacturer C of C within the order notes.
