Basics of Lithium-Ion Batteries - Another Teaching Moment | DigiKey

Lithium-ion batteries are a type of rechargeable battery widely used in modern portable electronics like smartphones, tablets, and laptops. They are lightweight and have a high energy density, making them ideal for devices requiring significant power storage in a compact form. Lithium-ion batteries efficiently store energy with a low self-discharge rate, about half that of nickel-based batteries. Additionally, they do not suffer from memory effect, meaning they can be recharged without fully discharging first. Their combination of high power output, energy efficiency, and light weight makes them a preferred choice for portable devices.
