These MCUs incorporate a 2.4 GHz transceiver that enables the use of Bluetooth® low energy (BLE) v4.2 and IEEE® 802.15.4 (thread). Built on ARM® Cortex®-M0+ core, with up to 512 Kb of Flash and up to 128 Kb of SRAM, ultra low-power radio and standby currents, highly-integrated connectivity, security and analog capabilities, make these MCUs the ideal solution for connected portable, battery-powered applications.

There are three devices included in this KW41Z MCU family that all have the same features and specifications, but support different radio protocols as follows:

Kinetis KW41Z MCUs support BLE, generic FSK and IEEE 802.15.4 (thread)
Kinetis KW31Z MCUs support BLE and generic FSK 
Kinetis KW21Z MCUs support 802.15.4 MAC / PHY (thread) and simple MAC

The Kinetis KW41Z family of MCUs is an excellent solution for designs that require concurrent communication on both a BLE link and an 802.15.4 based network such as thread. These multi-mode capabilities enable direct communication using BLE via a mobile device or tablet and communication in a mesh network for local and remote control / monitoring.

To complement the offering, NXP includes a comprehensive suite of enablement of software and tools to help designs reach market faster and more robustly.

  • Multi-Protocol Radio: high-performance radio supporting Bluetooth Smart / BLE v4.2, generic FSK, and IEEE 802.15.4 (thread) based standards
  • Large Memory: enough memory to adequately accomodate desired networking stack(s) with ample room remaining for custom applications
  • Low Power: low transmit, receive and standby currents that maximize battery life; including standard coin-cells
  • Complete Enablement: fully compliant, certified BLE, thread, and 802.15.4 MAC / PHY. Support for generic FSK, BLE Mesh, SMAC, multiple RTOSes, KinetisSDK (KSDK), Kinetis development suite (KDS), and IAR IDEs
