nRF7001 Companion ICs

Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF7001 Wi-Fi 6 companion ICs provide seamless connectivity and SSID-based Wi-Fi locating, focusing exclusively on the 2.4 GHz frequency band. They are similar to nRF7002 ICs, except the nRF7001 ICs do not support the 5 GHz band, which means they do not offer dual-band functionality.

The nRF7001 are versatile Wi-Fi companion ICs that cater to various use cases across industries, including industrial, medical, and the Matter ecosystem. They seamlessly integrate with Matter, a smart home standard supported by prominent players. With their exceptional adaptability, the nRF7001 series empowers robust wireless connectivity across diverse applications, ensuring reliable performance and enhanced efficiency in Wi-Fi enabled devices.

Designed to work in conjunction with Nordic’s existing nRF52® and nRF53® series Bluetooth® low energy (BLE) system-on-chip (SoC) and nRF9160 cellular IoT system-in-package (SiP), the nRF7001 series offer a coexistence feature that allows for seamless coexistence with other protocols like BLE, Thread, or ZigBee®. They can also be used in conjunction with non-Nordic host devices.

To communicate with the host, SPI or QSPI interfaces can be used. The nRF7001 are integrated and supported in Nordic’s nRF Connect SDK. The nRF7002 DK allows for evaluating the nRF7001. They feature an nRF5340 host processor connected to the nRF7002 via QSPI.

The nRF7001 series is a cost-effective alternative to the nRF7002 for those who do not require 5 GHz functionality. They provide the same seamless connectivity as the nRF7002 while focusing on the 2.4 GHz frequency band only. This makes them an attractive option for those looking to implement low-power Wi-Fi connectivity in their IoT devices without incurring additional costs associated with dual-band functionality.
