ICL8201 - AC/DC Buck Controller for LED Tubes and Lamps
![]() |
The ICL8201 is a cascode structure current mode controller for non-isolated floating buck topologies. The cascode topology enables lower system cost and higher system efficiency. Lower system cost:
|
Higher System Efficiency and Reliability:
- No start-up resistor is required that would cause significant losses during the entire operation. These losses can be eliminated by using the cascode topology which increases the system efficiency and lifetime.
Target Applications:
- T8 lamp, GU10 lamp, A-lamp, Downlights

Dimmable Off-line LED Retrofit Lamps

One common problem resulting from compatibility issues with existing leading-edge and trailing-edge phase cut type dimmers: flickering and shimmering in dimmable LED retrofit lamps, especially at low light output levels. Easily avoid the issue by choosing semiconductors for offline retrofit lamps from Infineon.

E-transformer compatible MR16 LED lamps

Traditional filament-based low-voltage halogen lamps require a transformer to generate 12 V or 24 VAC. Most of the transformers in use are electronic transformers which are perfectly suited for resistive loads like traditional halogen lamps. MR16 LED retrofits vary from traditional halogen lamps in two points: they are a non-resistive load and the load of LED lamps very often is below the lower load limit of the transformer. This can cause disturbing effects like flicker.
Infineon offers reference solutions featuring high compatibility with electronic transformers. Most of the LED driver ICs include thermal protection feature at this high temperature application

AC/DC and DC/DC LED Driver ICs

LED drivers are used to provide a constant current to LED light engines for several applications such as commercial indoor lighting, street lighting and high bay lighting. For such applications, the requirements in terms of efficiency, power factor and system lifetime are usually higher than for LED retrofit lamps.

LED Strips and Multi-Channel LED Applications Linear LED Driver ICs

BCR linear LED drivers from Infineon are the best choice when you need to drive LED currents from 10 mA to 250 mA. They are especially ideal for low- to mid-power LEDs in general lighting applications. The result: the lowest cost solution with an ultra-low external part count and PCB space. Plus, our linear LED driver ICs allow for light output that can be adjusted via an external resistor. Here, PWM dimming is made possible by one of two ways: a microcontroller interface or an external digital transistor. Another key feature is the negative thermal coefficient that protects the LED load from overheating.
