Hartland Controls’, a Littelfuse Company, start and run capacitors feature an internal construction that meets various HVAC electrical load requirements. In an air conditioner or furnace, capacitors work with compressor, blower, and outside fan motors. Finding the correct capacitor size is critical for motor efficiency and life. The HCK series are sized by capacitance and their ability to collect and store energy, measured in microfarads (μF). Start capacitors send an electric jolt to start the motor, are designed only for motor start-up, and have higher capacitance ratings (70 μF or above) than a run capacitor. They must rapidly bring the motor to a sufficient, predetermined speed and then disconnect from the circuit. Run capacitors are left connected to the auxiliary coil after disconnecting the start capacitor. Since these capacitors are designed for continuous duty, they have low capacitance ratings (typically below 70 μF) and help the motor maintain a charge by changing the phase angle when the motor is powered up, so the rotor turns more easily, enabling the motor to run more efficiently. Some applications can have dual run capacitors, which are start and run capacitors housed together. Combining the two capacitors in a single unit creates a more cost-effective option that can save space, helpful in a small mounting area.
